Community Service
community service

As reflected in its Mission Statement, the King William Association is committed to community service, focusing mainly on school children and their environment. KWA’s activities include:

Supporting Local Schools

The Association has supported Brackenridge High School’s annual band camp and the football team through regular donations. At the 100-year-old Bonham Elementary School, KWA has financially supported its library, new playground, mentorship programs, and annual field trip to the San Antonio Children’s Museum (which has separately received support from KWA). In 1997, KWA members served as design advisors, parent representatives, lobbyists, and architects for the elementary school’s $1.4 million renovation and expansion. The libraries at Burnet Elementary School, Page Middle School, and Brackenridge High School have received all received grants to purchase library materials.

Supporting Higher Education

Since1986, KWA has given $6,000 annually to four to six Brackenridge High School seniors to attend the Alamo Community College District. We honor the scholarship recipients at a special reception each year.

Supporting Children

KWA has contributed monetary donations, clothing, toys, games, supplies, parties, and Easter Egg Hunts for the children at the Children’s Shelter of San Antonio. KWA has provided financial support and volunteers for the Mission Trails Optimists Club, an organization dedicated to ___. KWA also contributed financial support to the Social and Health Research Center to start a Bienestar Health Program at Bonham Elementary. This innovative approach to health education teaches children how to prevent diabetes, a disease prevalent in the Hispanic community.

Supporting the Arts

KWA provided start-up funds for Say Sí: San Antonio Youth Say Yes!, a dynamic and prospering arts program for talented teenagers from urban high schools. Since Say Sí’s inception in 1993, KWA has contributed over $30,000. Additionally, KWA members regularly provide board leadership and program support. KWA also provided equipment for the textile department of the Southwest School of Art and Craft in memoriam of Maggie Hartley, a neighbor known for her spinning and weaving.

Supporting the Neighborhood

King William residents help maintain the historic area by joining forces with Adopt-a-River, “Rivert Rats,” and Basura Bash programs to clean its river corridor. The Garden Club, in cooperation with City Parks and Recreation, prunes and weeds the river’s bank year around. Other KWA crews regularly paint out graffiti and monitor City Code compliance year round. A special KWA standing committee known as the Green Team was recently organized to address other environmental and safety concerns such as street lighting, signage, sidewalks, and plantings. The Green Team successfully installed several trees along Fir Street and will soon install several more along South Alamo Street.
